#10. Rottweiler

With its strong muscles and large build, the rottweiler makes for a stunning work dog. One of few working class dogs to make the top 10 list, this is a great protector and a great family companion.

#9. Dachshund

Some call it the "wiener dog," but its true name is the dachshund. A cute and innocent looking dog, the dachshund is perfect for apartment living or a smaller household, and is generally easy to train.

#8. Poodle

Poodles aren't only stylish, they're also incredibly intelligent and well mannered. These dogs are perfect for people with allergies, because they possess a hypoallergenic coat.

#7. Boxer

Boxers were originally developed in the 19th century as a fighting dog. This doesn't make them aggressive though. Boxers are a very active breed and require a great deal of exercise, so they're perfect for a younger family with lots of energy.

#6. English Bulldog

English Bulldogs are well known as mascots for schools and sports teams. Western Illinois University is a good example. English bulldogs are easily recognizable by their short legs and "just ran into the wall" looking face. They are easy to groom and make good family dogs.

The Yorkshire Terrier was originally developed in Yorkshire, England as a rat wrangler. Commonly called "Yorkies," the Yorkshire Terrier is popular today due to its ability to adapt well to new environments, its great deal of lasting energy, and its portable size.

You may remember this breed from such popular films and TV shows as Air Bud, Homeward Bound, Full House, Up, Pushing Daisies, and even The Drew Carey Show. They are often considered the perfect family pet, as they're active, friendly, loyal, intelligent and playful. Their soft beautiful fur doesn't hurt either of course. Golden Retrievers are often times even utilized as guide dogs and search & rescue dogs.

#3. Beagle

The notorious beagle! Though cute, gentle, and loving, the beagle is indeed a wanderer. Beagles are notorious for sniffing their way into trouble, but if well trained can be very good dogs. The beagle is the only dog breed that's successfully ranked within the top 10 most popular list every year since it was accepted by the AKC in 1885.

#2. German Shepherd

Made famous by Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepherd is a great companion dog. It's also known by most as a "police dog," and has been many times utilized as a military dog. In fact, it was a German Shepherd that helped to take down Osama Bin Laden with Seal Team Six.

Anyone who frequents dog parks will know, Labrador Retrievers are everywhere. This is because Labradors, commonly called labs, are generally well mannered, easy-going, intelligent, loyal, easy to groom, protective, loving, companion dogs. They also make good guide dogs, and come in three different colors (chocolate, black, and yellow).
